The Secrets of the Everyday: The Minor Arcana, 56 Fragments of Life

The Minor Arcana, which means 'small secrets,' might sound less important than the Major Arcana by name alone. But this is a big misunderstanding! If the Major Arcana is a grand epic spanning human life, the Minor Arcana are the countless 'fragments of daily life' that fill that epic.

These cards weren't originally made for 'divination.' As I mentioned before, they originated from the trump card games that were popular in 14th-century Europe.

The four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles) symbolized the social classes or professions of the time and were closely connected to people's daily lives. But as time went on, these cards transcended simple game tools to play a crucial role in understanding human life more deeply. Why Is It Called the 'Minor' Arcana?

The name 'Minor' does not refer to the size or importance of the card's symbolism. Rather, it refers to the 'everyday, repetitive experiences' in contrast to the 'fateful and great changes' symbolized by the Major Arcana.

Major Arcana: These are life's 'major turning points.' They symbolize events that can completely change the direction of one's life, such as a new beginning (The Fool), success (The Sun), or a shocking change (The Tower).

Minor Arcana: These are life's 'minor events.' They represent the emotions, thoughts, and incidents we experience daily, such as conflicts at work (Five of Swords), the joy of love (Two of Cups), financial stability (Three of Pentacles), or a new idea (Ace of Wands).

If the Major Arcana is a 'calendar' that reflects your life, the Minor Arcana is a 'diary' that records your daily life, day by day. The Evolution of the Minor Arcana: From Pictures to Stories

In early Tarot decks, like the Marseille Tarot, the Minor Arcana were simply a series of suits. The 'Five of Wands' card, for example, would just have five wands arranged on it.

This required readers to possess a high level of skill to interpret the card's meaning by combining the suit's meaning (Wands = passion) with the number's meaning (5 = conflict).

However, in the early 20th century, with the emergence of the Rider-Waite deck, the fate of the Minor Arcana completely changed. The artist Pamela Colman Smith added vivid illustrations to all 56 cards.

The 'Five of Wands' card now showed five people competing with each other with wands. The meaning of 'conflict' became a much more intuitive and specific story.

The 'Five of Cups' card depicted a figure despairing over spilled cups while two upright cups stood behind him, conveying a complex mix of emotions like 'loss' and 'remaining hope.'

Thanks to these changes, the Minor Arcana became a friendly tool that anyone could connect to their own life by simply looking at the pictures, without the need to memorize complex symbols. The Use of the Minor Arcana: Containing the Wisdom of the Everyday

Today, the Minor Arcana is used as a tool to provide the most specific and practical advice for our daily questions.

The Cups cards: Tell stories about your emotional realms, such as love, friendship, and family relationships.

The Wands cards: Tell stories about your passion and creativity, such as your career, projects, and hobbies.

The Swords cards: Tell stories about your intellectual realms and challenges, such as conflicts, thoughts, and decision-making.

The Pentacles cards: Tell stories about your practical life, such as finances, health, and material stability.

The Minor Arcana provides insight into specific questions like, "How should I solve this problem at work today?" or "Is it a good time to confess my feelings to that person?" rather than grand questions like, "What will my life be like?"

Despite their name, the Minor Arcana are precious cards that hold the wisdom of the most important part of our lives: 'the everyday.' While the Major Arcana shows the big picture, the Minor Arcana tells the detailed story of how the figures within that picture feel and what they do.

Now, whenever you encounter these 56 cards, listen to their voices whispering to your daily life. The wisdom they contain will enrich your life even more.
